Oscar Engelbert is a real estate developer whose work has been shaped by a long-standing interest in architecture and design. Over the past two decades, he has overseen a number of residential and commercial developments, first in Stockholm and more recently in the United States. His projects are frequently noted for their collaborations with internationally recognized architects and for their emphasis on combining aesthetic design with residential function.
Beginning in Stockholm in the early 2000s, Engelbert focused on adapting historical industrial buildings for modern residential use. These initial projects involved detailed restoration and conversion of late 19th- and early 20th-century structures into open-plan apartments, often characterized by high ceilings, natural materials, and large windows. His work during this period helped contribute to a growing appreciation for design-led development in Sweden’s capital.
In subsequent years, Engelbert expanded the scope of his work through partnerships with architecture firms such as Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), OMA, and Claesson Koivisto Rune. One of the most recognized results of these collaborations is 79&Park, located at the edge of Stockholm’s Gärdet park. Designed by BIG and completed between 2016 and 2019, the terraced building is clad in cedar wood and incorporates rooftop gardens and angled apartments to optimize light and views. It received several international distinctions, including the Architizer A+ Award and a nomination for the Kasper Salin Prize, Sweden’s most prominent architecture award.
Another major project, Norra Tornen, was designed by OMA and completed in 2020. Built with prefabricated concrete modules, the towers represent a departure from conventional Scandinavian high-rise design and were awarded the International High-Rise Award that same year. The jury cited the project’s innovative construction techniques and architectural form.
In 2022, Engelbert concluded new development activity in Sweden and turned his focus to the United States, citing changing market conditions and opportunities abroad. Together with his wife and business partner, Giovanna Engelbert, he began acquiring and managing real estate in Los Angeles, where He is now owning and operate several commercial properties. His work reflects a interest in both architectural design and cultural engagement.
Recent projects include the repositioning of 1601 Vine Street in Hollywood, a commercial property that had experienced tenant turnover during the pandemic. Following its acquisition, the building was leased to Skims, a fashion brand co-founded by Kim Kardashian. In 2024, the Engelberts partnered with entrepreneur Jens Grede to purchase a property at 331 N Maple Drive in Beverly Hills.
